Life as an assistant designer is not easy, in case you thought everything in fashion was all rainbows and butterflies. Life in fashion is a constant uphill battle, but I've definitely got a tighter grip on it than I did last week.
My first few days were full of chaos--between being trained, to running around the office, to people getting fired, there wasn't a dull moment. It went by in a blur, and I left the office Friday feeling excited, terrified, and desperate for a drink.
I have my own desk, which I spend every last inkling of a second trying to organize as things get piled higher and higher on it. Most of the stuff assistant designers do is paperwork: trim sheets, fabric sheets, sketch after sketch. But the cool thing is my boss is pretty open to suggestions, my own sketches, trim ideas, etc. so I'll get to do actual designing. Most companies don't even allow their assistants to give ideas on a button, so I'm pretty excited that I'll get to do some designing. It's been a little rough figuring out what my job is and learning everything, but today I really felt like I was on top of things. I think I'm officially in charge of the division's blouses, so I'm excited to have a big responsibility and challenge.
For the most part my team is great, and my favorite part is that we work in the same room as all the sewers and pattern makers, full of the sweetest Italian men and many Asian women who passed out goodies for the Chinese New Year. The only thing that really plummeted is my sleep, from 13ish hours a night to 7. I guess that's the price you pay for a real job and some money.
Until next time,
xoxo,
Ms. Manhattan
