I've been a little homesick lately. It's probably due to the fact that my teacher from high school came to visit, but it was so nice to have someone to talk to that understands exactly where I come from.
We met at my work and I got to show her around the whole office and the sample room. My teacher, Mrs. K, taught 4 fashion design classes at my high school, and she taught me how to sew...so basically I wouldn't be here without her. I've kept in touch with her as I do with my teachers from SIU, and I would visit her at least twice a year and talk to her students about fashion design. It's nice being able to teach her a thing or two after I learned how to draft patterns and sew complicated projects, and I'm one of her only students that is actually pursuing design. So seeing how a design company really works was really fun, especially since you can't really find any of those in St. Louis.
We went to dinner, which is always an issue for me since I don't eat out on a regular basis and therefore don't know where the hip and happening places are. Foresquare is my best friend when it comes to these things, and I immidately recognized Butter from Gossip Girl ("I have a table at Butter. Reservations under Waldorf in case there's an after party.") So of course we had to try Butter. Word of advice: Don't order steak tartare if you don't know what it is...guess I'm not as glamorous as I thought I was. I just wanted a steak...and it came minced and rare, which is apparently what steak tartare is. But their Butter was superb...so at least they have a good name sake. After dinner we got froyo, and it was so fun to catch up and see how everyone is doing back in STL. I really didn't realize how far I'd come until I told her what's been happening these past 7 months.

On Thursday I finally forced myself to get back into running (I'm not really sure if what I do could be considered running, I've basically invented my own form of run/walking and it's pathetic). Since I live so close to the water, I thought I'd run as far east as I could so I could at least have a nice view while trying to avoid the eyes of anyone slightly attractive. But I forgot that the East River has a River Walk for runners, walkers, and dogs, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the entrance to the walk not far from me. The walk is lower elevation, so there are platforms up by our streets and then you walk down and you're literally next to the river. It was a beautiful day and I was able to take an amazing panorama view from one of the platforms before going down to the walk. This was a historic day for me, as I finished a run and didn't want to just drop dead on the side of the street afterwords.
My homesickness was increased when I visited my favorite shopping mall in Manhattan, with Target, Aldi, and Burlington Coat factory. I definitely miss the days (and prices) of running to Walmart and buying everything I didn't even need for less than my small weekly grocery list each week. But even at Target, Nutella is still $5. 😑
I think the only solution is for me to finally have a visitor (hint hint st. louisans), so I could really show everyone what it's like here--Facetime and pictures really aren't enough. The real solution thought would be for everyone I know and love to move here, but I guess that's asking a little too much of all of you. I'll just have to wait until June to see you all, but the wait will be worth it.
xoxo,
Ms. Manhattan
